Dr Jessica Barnes

Senior Advisor

Jessica is a Senior Advisor in the Skills team, and her work in the team initially investigated ways to support learners to improve their maths and English skills, with a particular focus on students in further education colleges. She is currently working on how to support people in improving skills in a range of areas and to make decisions about learning and training opportunities, particularly in regard to STEM subjects and careers. Her other work has included helping to redesign services with the Department for Work and Pensions, and exploring how to improve gender equality.

Prior to joining BIT, Jessica was a post-doctoral researcher at the Medical Research Council Cognition & Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, where she investigated the impact of cognitive training on working memory. She has a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Queensland, Australia, with her doctoral thesis examining the neural mechanisms of cognitive control.
